Food Law

Food law is a functional field of law. It is defined by its function regarding food in society, not by doctrinal legal considerations. Food law comprises all rules and regulations, case law and policies that relate to food safety, food security and food trade. Food law covers aspects of constitutional law, criminal law, private law and administrative law. Food law is present at the global level (UN, FAO, WHO, WTO, Codex Alimentarius), at regional level (EU), at national level (USA, China, NL). Even private actors contribute to regulation of food related issues.
I very much enjoy unravelling and comparing these different levels of food law.
In exploring the emerging field of food law, I have started out from a legal systematic approach. Emphasis is placed on finding an mapping the system and structure. This shows I am coming from a civil law rather than a common law cultural background.
