University of Copenhagen - Department of Food and Resource Economics
From 15 August 2019 onwards I am affiliated to the Department of Food and Resource Economics (Institut for Fødevare- og Ressourceøkonomi - IFRO) at the University of Copenhagen (Denmark) as professor of EU Food Law.
European Institute for Food Law
The European Institute for Food Law (Est. 04-04-04) is a non-profit foundation aiming to advance the level of expertise and knowledge on food law, at national level, European level as well as global level.
In cooperation with Wageningen Academic Publishers, the European Institute for Food Law publishes the European Institute for Food Law Series of books on food law in the widest sense. It endorses the publication of the European Food and Feed Law Review.
My role in the European Institute for Food Law is director.
Food Law Academy
The Food Law Academy provides intensive education to people working in business, consultancy, government or academia in the area of food regulatory affairs. In food law, legal and technical issues come together. Experience shows that people working in this field often have a technological background and have acquired a working knowledge of legal issues in practice or lawyers who have acquired a working knowledge in food technology. For this reason, the summer school, while aiming to achieve a thorough level, does not presuppose a background in law.
With the European Institute for Food Law, I am co-owner of the Food Law Academy.
UPO University of Eastern Piedmont Italy
The University of Eastern Piedmont contracted me as professor of EU Food Law at the faculty of Biology.
Nederlandse Vereniging voor Levensmiddelenrecht (NVLR) / Dutch Food Law Association
NVLR was set up on World Food Day (16 October) 2003. NVLR is an independent platform to discuss national (i.e. Dutch), European and international food law in its widest sense including consumer law, feed law and animal welfare.
My role in NVLR is president (and co-founder).
Global Harmonization Initiative (GHI)
The Global Harmonization Initiative (GHI) is the international non-profit network of individual scientists and scientific organizations working together to promote harmonization of global food safety regulations and legislation.
We engage and empower food scientists and experts in industry, government and academia to voice scientific consensus and make recommendations on food safety laws and regulations, globally. Our aim is to provide objective and fact-based advice that will help harmonize conflicting regulations and legal policies to:
• Eliminate trade barriers that masquerade as food safety protections
• Reduce the needless destruction of safe foods within and across international borders
• Promote the use of innovative food safety technologies around the globe
• Lessen the potential for foodborne illness and pandemic outbreaks
My role in GHI is member of the board.
Asociación Iberoamericana para el Derecho Alimentario (AIBADA)
AIBADA granted me an honorary membership for achievements in food law in 2013. My work with AIBADA resulted in two papers in Spanish language; one on the structure of EU food law and one on the concept of unsafe food.
Food Bank Amsterdam
Some of my spare time I dedicate to volunteering at the Food Bank Amsterdam / Distribution Centre Noord Holland.
The Food Bank is a non-governmental non-profit organisation run by volunteers. It's purpose is to support the poorest in society who are unable to adequately feed themselves and their families by providing food packages on a weekly basis. At the same time we aim to prevent food waste by collecting from businesses food that might otherwise be discarded (for example because it is close to its date of durability).
I support the fundraising team. Your donations, even the smallest, are always welcome.
Wageningen University
From 1 September 2001 until 1 January 2019 I was full professor at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. First as professor of Law and Governance and later professor of Food Law. Find my inaugural address here and my farewell address here.
